A quick look at the Bengals' 24-0 loss to the Ravens Sunday at Paycor Stadium.
Historic Day
The Bengals and Ravens not only hooked up for the coldest game in Paycor Stadium in 25 years (a 10-degree kickoff, but they also played in the Ravens' first shutout since Lamar Jackson became their quarterback and the first time the Bengals were shut out since Joe Burrow became their quarterback.
The last time the Bengals were shut out was in the 2017 opener at Paycor, when the Ravens did it with current Burrow backup Joe Flacco as their quarterback.
It came on the heels of two road games the Bengals had scored a combined 66 points, including 32 in Baltimore. You can see why Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said he never saw a shutout coming.
"I did not realize (Burrow) had never been shut out. It's definitely pretty hard to shut them out," said Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey. "I know they were Tee-less (Higgins), but, nonetheless, it's a really big accomplishment to shut out a quarterback and a receiver (in JaâMarr Chase) of that kind of stature, so that was a major accomplishment, and hopefully it'll get us some momentum going into the next week."
Quote of the Day
Burrow: "There's not a team in the NFL that would've won the game today if I was the quarterback."
Knight Moves
Just 17 days ago in Baltimore, Bengals rookie linebacker Demetrius Knight Jr. picked Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson for his first career interception. Then, on Sunday, he got his first two NFL sacks stalking Jackson and making sure the two-time NFL MVP didn't run out of the pocket.
"That guy is going to be wearing a Gold Jacket one day," Knight said. "I can't make those plays without the coverage and the rush together."
Knight said they pretty much had the same plan they had in Baltimore, when defensive coordinator Al Golden forced Jackson into three of the Ravens' five turnovers.
"In regards to making sure we had one or two spies on (Jackson). Those cases were perfect calls by Coach Al," Knight said.
Knight is making more and more plays as the season goes on.
"It's the basics. MJ and Kobe and the legends stress the basics," Knight said. "How can you go to the next thing if you haven't mastered making the layup off the glass as easy as 1-2-3? It's about slowing down what's going on around me, going back and looking at installs, taking time out of practice to make the basics muscle memory so you don't flinch when it's time to make the play."
Tone Setter
The game began as if the Bengals were going to replicate what happened in Baltimore Thanksgiving Night.
On the game's first series, they manhandled Ravens running back Derrick Henry for a two-yard loss on one of safety Jordan Battleâs team-leading eight tackles and then forced a punt with the first of edge Myles Murphyâs career-high two sacks.
Then the Bengals rattled off 10 plays from their 20 to the Ravens 25, where they faced a third-and-four. Only after Chase dropped a quick second-and-four over the middle that may have got them inside the 10.
After going 10-for-12 on third down last week in Buffalo, this one set the tone for a day they would convert only three of 15.
After offsetting penalties erased Chase's illegal shift, Burrow took a 15-yard sack out of field-goal range when Ravens linebacker Tavius Robinson lined up on the line and shot past rookie left guard Dylan Fairchild as the Bengals went into a slide protection.
"A mental mistake by me," Burrow said. "I made the wrong call."
The next time the Bengals reached the Ravens 25, it was early in the fourth quarter, they were down, 17-0, and the same script unfolded.
Robinson, playing his first game in two months, again wreaked havoc after left tackle Orlando Brown Jr. was called for a false start and wide receiver Mitchell Tinsley dropped a touchdown pass in the right corner of the end zone.
Edge Kyle Van Noy then faked a blitz up the middle and when Fairchild went to engage him, Van Noy dropped back into the middle. Robinson shot through the hole and Burrow had to unload it. Van Noy picked it, and he ended up handing it to safety Alhoi Gilman for a combined 95-yard pick-six.
"They were getting good pressure. Some uncharacteristic mental mistakes on my end, and some unforced errors," is how Burrow summed up the day. Asked what Baltimore did differently than 17 days ago, he said, "They blitzed less. Their front four were able to get a little more pressure, so credit to them."
Burrow was extremely hard on himself. "This one's on me," he told the press.
Before he took the blame in front of the media, he stood up behind closed doors in front of his teammates and took the blame. They, in turn, rallied around him.
"Not surprising. That's who he is. Great leader, great teammate. Great player," said right guard Dalton Risner. "But that's not him. Thanks for the sentiment Joe, but no way. One guy can't take it all. I'm speaking for myself. I have things to clean up."
Center and captain Ted Karras: "Everyone is to blame for 24-0. Our defense gave up 17 points. That should be enough to beat the Baltimore Ravens. Everyone is indicted in that."
Myles' Big Run
No. 9 isn't the only standup guy from Sunday. So is No 99. Murphy took the blame for the Ravens' first touchdown, Jackson's 30-yard flip into the flat through a zero blitz that running back Rasheen Ali went through untouched.
Murphy said he was supposed to drop and cover the back instead of continuing to rush. It marred a terrific game, the first one in which he racked up two sacks, and continues a strong stretch of activity. He also had another hit on Jackson. The Bengals supplied enough pressure for four sacks Sunday with the front keeping Jackson on the move.
"Preparation," Murphy said. "Believing in the rushes, your plan and the game plan."
What's Next
Next Sunday's game (1 p.m.-Cincinnati's Local 12) in Miami won't mark the biggest temperature differential in back-to-back games for the Bengals. That forever belongs to the 1981 AFC champs who won the title in minus-9 and then went indoors to play the Super Bowl two weeks later.
According to Sunday's stats, the game pits the two most accurate passers in the history of the NFL with Burrow No. 1 with a 68.2 completion percentage and Miami's Tua Tagovailoa checking in at 67.9. It's the second the two 2020 draft classmates have met with Burrow getting a 2022 Thursday night win over him in a game Tagovailoa left with a concussion.
