Before Wednesday's practice, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor said he doesn't plan to play his starters in Saturday's preseason finale (1 p.m.-Cincinnati's FOX 19) against the Colts at Paycor Stadium.
Taylor also said:
- He fears backup left guard Cordell Volson is lost for the year with a shoulder injury and wouldn't comment on guard Dalton Risner's free-agent visit on Tuesday.
- Volson appears to be the only player definitely out of the Sept. 7 regular-season opener in Cleveland with the others pretty much listed day-to-day.
- Starting defensive tackle B.J. Hill (foot) is ready to ramp it up for the opener after they eased him through camp. Taylor said he was going to put him in live team reps Wednesday until he cancelled that period.
"Today would be the first day he starts working in team drills," Taylor said. "We played two days ago. I had grand plans when I did this a couple of weeks ago, and then I scaled way back after seeing the team (Wednesday), kind of what they went through. So, as I say that, he was scheduled to take live team reps. We've taken away all the live 11-on-11 reps today, so it'll just be jog-through when you see him out there. But the plan was to get him in there for the live reps today."
- Taylor is playing it cool when it comes to the first team defense's outing on Monday against Washington, where they allowed two touchdowns, and 106 yards on six running plays.
"We want to go out there and shut down every offense we play in the preseason and score a bunch of points, but an overreaction to five to ten plays, you're not going to get that from me, I can promise you that," Taylor said.
