Postgame Quick Hits | Bengals Looking To Build Off Explosive Fourth Quarter As Ja'Marr Breaks Out

A quick look at Sunday's game at Paycor Stadium, Detroit's 37-24 victory over the Bengals.

Play Of the Day

Down 28-3, the Bengals offense broke out on the first play of the fourth quarter on a first-and-10 at the Lions 15. Quarterback Jake Browning did his best Joe Burrow as he scrambled away from pressure and at the last instant, went out-of-bounds on the right sideline while whipping a ball only wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase could catch amid three Lions.

And then Chase made the sideline disappear with a move straight out of the Aronoff and the Cincinnati Ballet.

That 15-yard touchdown ignited a fourth quarter Browning re-grouped to hit eight of 10 passes for 133 yards and three touchdowns. It allowed him to finish 26 of 40 for 251 yards.

But it wasn't enough for a win or for a very tough "I lost the game," postgame news conference after his three early interceptions.

"I went to extend. Saw him running across the field and gave him a chance on the sideline. I just put it where only he could get to it," said Browning, who wasn't buying that it was a throw by a guy who seemingly wasn't playing tentatively despite three picks.

"I didn't have enough good throws today. That's why we lost."

Jammin' Ja'Marr

Less than four minutes later, Chase stunned the Lions on a 64-yard touchdown bomb on a play where there was absolutely no one near him. Including cornerback Amik Robertson as Chase caught a long one over his head on the left sideline.

No one has more 60-yard touchdowns than Chase since he came into the league. No one has more 60-yarders in Bengals history. It put him over 100 yards for the 21st time in his career. The 110-yard day put him past Isaac Curtis' 20 100-yarders and into third place on the Bengals all-time list.

On a day Browning blamed himself and head coach Zac Taylor blamed himself for Browning's struggles, Chase tipped his hat to Taylor.

"Double move call. Great call by Zac at the time," Chase said. "It was in two-man. The corner was playing the inside. Great call by him on that."

Yoshi Delivers

Bengals No. 3 receiver Andrei Iosivas delivered a career-best 82 yards on a career-tying five catches. He had two for 45 yards in the second half. The Lions are most comfortable keeping their base defense on the field even when the other teams go three wides.

"We just have to exploit the matchups where they are, and I think we did. That's why we moved the ball," Iosivas said. "That's our bread-and-butter. We have the best pass catchers in the league. I l always like it when we spread it out, definitely."

Welcome To NFL Moment

Lions rookie backup left tackle Giovani Manu, a fourth-round pick out of British Columbia, came in Sunday with all of seven NFL snaps and was pressed into a start because of an injury to Taylor Decker.

On the 13th snap of the day, he learned why Bengals edge Trey Hendrickson is All-Pro and the defending NFL sack champion.

After the Bengals defense let the Lions get out fast with a touchdown on the first drive, they shut them down the rest of the first half.

The Lions drove to the Bengals 32 on the next series. On first and 10, Hendrickson roared past Manu's outside shoulder and drilled Lions quarterback Jared Goff for the classic empty arm sack. His arm went forward, but the ball wasn't in the hand because Hendrickson chalked up his 12th forced fumble since 2021, most by an NFL edge.

Linebacker Logan Wilson fell on it for the Bengals at their 28. Hendrickson added another sack, giving him four this season and some tape for the rookie to digest.

Game Changer

The Bengals defense gave them a shot. Evan McPherson’s 50-yard field goal at the first-half gun made it 14-3 with them getting the second-half kickoff. But on the second play of the half, Browning threw behind tight end Mike Gesicki for his third interception of the day on a ball picked by linebacker Alex Anzalone. The Lions scored six plays later to make it 21-3.

"That was the plan. Double them up," Browning said. "I tried to force something that wasn't there."

Quote of the Day

Ja'Marr Chase on Browning

"Jake has faced a lot of adversity by himself and just with the team period. But I tell him to keep his head up, don't throw his head down. Just be a leader. At the end of the day, we all have his back. We all need him to be our quarterback. The way he stayed in the game and still fighting, that's what we need in a quarterback."

Grinder of the Game

McPherson stayed perfect on the season with his fifth field goal. He survived a high snap to pop through his Bengals' best 25th 50-yarder. Then, after he rolled an onside kick with 2:57 left, he was in the middle of a scrum that gave the ball to the Lions.
