Bengals Pregame Quick Hits | Fairchild Ruled Out; Marvin Lewis Sighting

GREEN BAY, Wis. _ Bengals rookie left guard Dylan Fairchild (knee) tried to give it a go Sunday, but he was deactivated, along with rookie defensive tackle Shemar Stewart (ankle) when head coach Zac Taylor handed in his list at Lambeau Field.

That means vet Dalton Risner probably moves into left guard after he was hurt playing right guard a few weeks ago. In his first four seasons, he made 62 starts at left guard for Denver.

As expected, wide receiver Ja’Marr Chase, who missed practice Friday with an illness, was up.

Flacco In Familiar Surroundings

Joe Flacco has been here before.

On a couple of fronts.

Sunday is his fourth start here at Lambeau Field, scene of one of his best games as a passer. He also got a good look at this formidable Packers defense just 28 days ago when he quarterbacked the Browns to a 13-10 win in Cleveland.

In that one, he dropped back 38 times, got blitzed 12 times and was sacked on two of them. Will the Packers oil it up again? They don't usually blitz that much. That was 31.5% of the time, and their season average is about 18%.

Still, despite having a bye week, the Packers' 20 hits on a quarterback are tied for third in the league. On that day, they controlled Flaco's deep ball, holding him to less than four yards per pass.

"It's probably a little bit helpful, the fact that you've been able to watch them on film and kind of see what they do and actually go out and play against them," Flacco said last week. "See how physical they are and all that stuff. I still think, just like any other football game, it's about kind of focusing on ourselves and what we do best."

The Browns ran it 18 times that day from their lead rusher. That could be a number the Bengals are shooting for against an excellent Packers pass rush spearheaded by the seven combined sacks of edges Micah Parsons and Rashan Gary. Bengals running back Chase Brown hasn't carried that many since the opener, and the Bengals' 17-16 win over Flacco helped by his 21 carries.

In 2017 while playing for the Ravens, Flacco completed nearly 80% of his passes (22-28) for 183 yards in a 23-0 win over the Packers here.

Marv Sighting

Former Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis greeted Bengals president Mike Brown with a hug on the field before the game as he got set to be an analyst for Sports USA Radio. Although the only player and coach left from his record 16 seasons as Bengals head coach is special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons, Lewis just might be pulling for his old club.

Still, he says it's not all that weird calling a game with Bengals uniforms: "Nobody's left."

These guys never forget. The last time he was here with the Bengals in 2017, the Packers tied the game with 17 seconds left on an Aaron Rodgers touchdown pass, and on the first snap of overtime, rookie running back Joe Mixon had trouble with his footing and lost two yards.

"They took control right there," said Lewis, and two-and-a-half-minutes later Rodgers completed a 72-yard bomb to set up the winning field goal.

He likes the pickup of Flacco, but says the Bengals offense has to stop more than Parsons.

"That blocking scheme is more apparent now, you have to stop No. 1," Lewis said. "But that's opened it up for (Gary)."

In his first season without football in about 60 years (he just turned 67 last month), it sounds like Lewis can't get enough. He looks forward to watching tape: "I get bored pretty easily."

Slants and Screens

Justin Rascati, the Bengals passing game coordinator, beat Flacco in a college duel where he quarterbacked James Madison over Delaware in a rout. It was senior night and what Rascati remembers from that game is one of his coaches needling him in warmups.

"If you want to see how a real quarterback throws, turn around and watch Flacco," Rascati says …

Also inactive for the Bengals was newly-acquired defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson, as well as tight end Cam Grandy, wide receiver Jermaine Burton and cornerback Marco Wilson
