The Bengals rode backup quarterback Jake Browning’s third career fourth-quarter comeback to one of their more improbable victories in Sunday's 31-27 win over the Jaguars before 65,871 in the Paycor Stadium opener.
STAT OF THE DAY
The Bengals went to 2-0 for the first time in seven years, and 44% of their playoff teams have started 2-0.
PLAYER OF THE DAY
Bengals WR Ja’Marr Chase
As good as Browning was in place of the injured Joe Burrow (left toe), Bengals wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase was immense with 14 catches for 165 yards and his first touchdown of the season. Plus, he had two catches for 23 yards in the final roller-derby drive that included the longest of the 15 plays on a 16-yarder skating past Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter.
And, he took the blame for the first of Browning's three interceptions.
Chase now has the three biggest receiving games in Bengals history. There are his record 15 grabs two years ago in Arizona, and he had another 14-catch game last season in Dallas.
GAME-CHANGER
The Bengals had a fourth-and-five from their own 33 with 1:54 left and trailing, 27-24. Browning switched the route for wide receiver Andrei Iosivas, split wide right on Hunter. Hunter was flipping over from wide receiver all day and making his first extended stand on NFL defense.
Iosivas beat Hunter off the line, Hunter didn't turn his head around down the right sideline, and he was called for a 25-yard pass interference penalty that gave the Bengals life at the Jags 42.
"I knew that he would back up. I beat him off the line," Iosivas said. "I had it over the top. I thought (Browning) was going to throw it way out there. It might have worked out in our favor. It stopped the clock. I would have scored too quickly."
PLAY OF THE DAY
No one put more air back in the building than Bengals WR Mitchell Tinsley when he picked the opening drive of the second half to tie the game at 17 with his first NFL catch. Not only his first NFL catch, but his first touchdown catch. Not only his first touchdown catch, but a marvelous acrobatic one-hander fending off cornerback Jarrian Jones in the right corner four minutes into the second half.
"They believe in me. We've done it before," said Tinsley, a Bengals training camp standout after barely playing in Washington during the two previous years that were his first two seasons in the league. "It's kind of crazy how that worked out. I could have made that catch way easier. To me, this is a beginning. One-handed is great, but I've got to get better."
Browning saw it like this: "If you're wearing a Bengals' uniform and you're suited up Sunday and you're one-on-one, I'm giving you a chance."
QUOTE OF THE DAY: C TED KARRAS
It was a nightmare, and luckily we've got the best Q2 in the league. It sucks we had to exercise that depth. There's a touch of gray on it. We won the game. I'm very happy for that."
BROWNNG ON HIS LAST DRIVE THOUGHTS
"Just be delusional. I had thrown three picks and still we have a chance to win the game. You can't be worried about a fourth one in that situation because you have chance to win. The defense did a good job forcing the turnover on downs. Just keep being aggressive. The moment calls for it."
SLANTS AND SCREENS
Taylor had no information on Burrow's toe injury or rookie defensive lineman Shemar Stewart's ankle injury.
The Bengals go to Minnesota next week where, of course, Browning played his first two seasons in the league on the practice squad before coming to the Bengals in 2021 …
