Thursday update: Benson sits out

Updated: 6:20 p.m.

The Bengals worked Thanksgiving but running back Cedric Benson didn't and missing the first two days of practice is usually not a good sign for a game day activation. The club has said it wants to go slow with Benson's sore hip muscle because it has the potential to be nagging given the location of the injury and he hasn't practiced or played for the past 11 days.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said Wednesday that even if Benson does play, backup running back Bernard Scott is going to continue to get considerable playing time, and the club could be more comfortable with Larry Johnson now that he's had two weeks of practice.

Also shelved for the second straight day were wide receiver Laveranues Coles (chest) and Domata Peko (knee). Limited for the second straight day were left end Robert Geathers (hip), cornerbacks Johnathan Joseph (foot) and Morgan Trent (knee), defensive tackle Tank Johnson (knee)and WILL linebacker Keith Rivers (calf). SAM linebacker Rey Maualuga (foot) rested Wednesday but was limited Thursday. Left guard Evan Mathis (ankle) went full go Thursday.
