Smith activated

Updated: 8:25 p.m.

Head coach Marvin Lewis said during his Monday press conference that with the return of tackle Andre Smith to the active roster off a two-week roster exemption, the club has waived running back DeDe Dorsey. Lewis said Dorsey simply got caught up in a numbers game at the running back position.

Lewis would only say that Smith is progressing from his broken foot suffered 17 days ago, but wouldn't give a timetable on a return.

This is the third time Dorsey has been cut in his career and second by the Bengals. He wrote a great script for Hard Knocks in the preseason when he battled Brian Leonard for a roster spot and both made it when Dorsey blocked a punt for a touchdown in the preseason finale. But he wasn't active in the 12-7 loss to Denver while Leonard converted a fourth-down run out of the Wildcat and added an 18-yard catch in the Bengals touchdown drive. Rookie Bernard Scott's first NFL run and only one Sunday went for a six-yard loss.

"We had 53 guys, and we needed a spot," Lewis said. "We were one heavy at running back. DeDe did a lot to stay here, but at this point, where we are, DeDe was the guy we needed to release today."

Lewis said left guard Nate Livings, who left with a knee injury in the second quarter and was replaced by Evan Mathis, may not play in Green Bay this Sunday. Lewis said Leonard should be OK after he got dinged after getting grabbed around the neck on that last run.
