Rudi doubtful

Updated: 4:05 p.m.

Running back Rudi Johnson (hamstring) is doubtful after not practicing again Friday and looks like he's going to miss his third game of October.

Chad Johnson was back at practice full-go in preparation for Sunday's game against the AFC North-leading Steelers. Johnson sat out Thursday's practice to rest a sore ankle.

Running back Chris Perry worked on the side early in practice, prepping for next week's return to practice.

Linebacker Caleb Miller (back) did not practice Friday and is out. Wide receiver Antonio Chatman (hamstring) returned after being excused from Thursday's practice for a non-football reason and went through a full practice Friday but is listed as questionable.

For the Steelers, defensive end Aaron Smith (knee) was officially ruled out Friday. Cornerback Bryant McFadden (ankle) and safety Ryan Clark (abdomen) are doubtful. Clark didn't practice and McFadden was limited.

Maxwell

The Bengals promoted Marcus Maxwell to the roster from the Bengals practice squad Friday and released wide receiver Courtney Roby to make room.

The 6-4, 205-pound Maxwell is a second-year player out of Oregon who signed a three-year contract. After he signed to the Cincinnati practice squad Oct. 4, he drew rave reviews from some of the Bengals other receivers.

As a seventh-round draft choice of the San Francisco 49ers, he played in four games as a rookie in 2005 and had no stats. Three weeks after the Niners waived him in the 2006 final cuts, he signed to the 49ers practice squad. He was with the 49ers this past preseason, with one catch for 11 yards, and was waived by San Francisco Aug. 28.

Roby signed with the Bengals as a free agent on Oct. 16 and was active against the Jets but didn't play.
