When it came to marking their ballots, season ticket members opted for their version of That '70s Show when they elected to the Bengals Ring of Honor two prominent members from the franchise's first full decade of existence in Dave Lapham and Lemar Parrish.
The show officially airs at Paycor Stadium during an Oct. 26 ceremony at halftime of the 1 p.m. game against the Jets.
Lapham, 73, their versatile offensive lineman and ubiquitous radio analyst, and Parrish, 77, the historic game-breaking cornerback, have big 21st-century personalities with instantly recognizable nicknames.
As "Mr. Bengal," Lapham heads to the ring with his bottomless well of enthusiasm during his 50th season with the club and 40th in the booth. "Leapin' Lemar," flies on the Paycor wall with his 13 career non-offensive touchdowns that are the third most in the 20th century NFL.
Lapham and Parrish join their head coach in the ring on the 50th anniversary of Paul Brown's last dance. Brown's 11-3 Bengals in 1975 were his best in his eighth and last season as head coach.
A few weeks ago, Lapham, who played all five line positions during 140 games and 10 seasons in Cincinnati, went to Paycor Stadium on what was another day of work.
Until Bengals president Mike Brown summoned him to his office to tell him of the fan vote. The man who has unabashedly passed down his emotions to generations of Bengals fans quivered again.
"I very much appreciate their support," Lapham says. "It's been like a dream come true. It's been magical.
"As a kid, you hope that you get an opportunity to play at the highest level of the sport that you love the most, and then it happens, you get a chance, and you hope to capitalize on that chance and do the best you possibly can do, and do everything you possibly can do to have a successful run. And it all worked out that way. I can't believe how fortunate I feel. I don't know why the good Lord put his hand down on my shoulder and said, 'You're going to get what you're hoping for, son.'"
Brown put a call through to Parrish on the outskirts of Atlanta in Palmetto, Ga., to tell him the fans hadn't forgotten, even though his 105th and last Bengals game came in the Astrodome against the Oilers in 1977.
"He's one of our best players ever. A great cover man. Receivers just couldn't shake free of him," Mike Brown says. "As a punt returner, he was excellent. Probably the most exciting punt returner we ever had … I think he still has the highest average per attempt for us."
Indeed, Parrish's 18.8 yards per punt return in 1974 is not only the Bengals' single-season record, but the longest in the NFL in the 64 seasons since the first year of the John F. Kennedy administration.
Throw in a gold tooth and mink coat that foreshadowed the flamboyance of Chad Ocho Cinco Johnson and eight Pro Bowls that matched the flash and dash of Deion Sanders, and Parrish was well ahead of ESPN and Netflix.
Or not, when you tell him he was Deion before Deion.
"I came first. You have to compare Deion to me," Parrish says. "I'm not surprised (of the vote). Nothing surprises me anymore. It is what it is these days. I put up the numbers. It's up to them.
"This is something I lived for and trained for. I'm very pleased. I want to thank Mike and the fans for voting for me. I'm grateful and thankful."
On the way to finishing a game behind the soon-to-be Super Bowl champion Steelers in the AFC Central and getting knocked out of field goal range in the final moments of a 31-28 playoff loss in Oakland, Paul Brown's 1975 Bengals featured the NFL's No. 2 offense quarterbacked by NFL passing champion and Lapham road roommate Ken Anderson, an inaugural ring of honor member.
Parrish is also reunited in the ring with his road roomie, the late Ken Riley, a Pro Football Hall of Famer who teamed with Parrish on the corner in '75 to anchor the NFL's No. 7 defense.
"I think that 1975 team was probably as good a football team from a personnel standpoint as I've been around," Lapham says. "Skilled people on that football team were ridiculously good, ridiculously good.
"And that's the one thing PB did, I thought, from a personnel standpoint. And then the coaching staff. PB put together a hell of a coaching staff for that team. A lot of phenomenal coaches. I just think that team was well constructed, well put together."
That season, Lapham's second in the league, he started his first 13 NFL games at right guard (via Pro Football Reference). He'd go on to start at left guard next to Pro Football Hall of Famer Anthony Munoz in the Bengals' first Super Bowl during the 1981 season, as well as play every line position during two games in 1980.
But Lapham's biggest spot is in the heart of Bengaldom after four decades he continues to speak to the faithful.
"He could play everywhere. He was a very smart guy and great person," Mike Brown says. "Our fans have come to know him with his media work over the years since he played, and they like his personality. They identify with him. He's a guy that represented the team well, and still does. He's someone that we are grateful to have had."
