Wednesday update

Updated: 11:05 a.m.

The Bengals hit the field Wednesday morning for the first of two sessions under partly cloudy and cool conditions.

Wide receiver Chad Johnson and running back DeDe Dorsey as well as defensive end Antwan Odom are still sidelined. Safety Dexter Jackson returned Wednesday after not practicing Tuesday. Running back Chris Perry, riding a stationary bike on the side, is taking this practice off but he will most likely practice during the evening session.

Another example of the defense trying to assert itself early in camp: During the morning session in shorts, safety Chinedum Ndukwe knocked down running back James Johnson after he caught a pass. A couple of plays later, rookie cornerback Simeon Castille made the defensive sideline erupt when he made a leaping interception.

Wide receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh did not practice because of tightness from Tuesday's session. He is 50/50 whether or not he will participate in the evening practice.
