Here is what to watch for:
Final Audition for Receivers
Among the several positions on the Bengals roster with spots still up for grabs is wide receiver. Last year, the team carried six receivers on its initial 53-man roster, and with five of those roles seemingly locked in heading into Saturday, there remains one ticket to be punched.
Notable names vying for that final spot are Mitchell Tinsley, Kendric Pryor and Isaiah Williams. Tinsley is coming off a breakout performance in Monday night's preseason game at Washington, when he caught five passes for 73 yards and two highlight-reel touchdowns. Pryor logged three catches of his own against the Commanders, including a key 20-yard reception on third down during a second-quarter scoring drive.
Williams played in the final six games of last season with Cincinnati after being acquired on waivers in November. While he saw limited action offensively, he took over punt return duties after Charlie Jones went down with an injury and chipped in 11 returns for 93 yards.
Other receivers who could turn heads with a big performance on Saturday include Cole Burgess, who spent last season on the team's practice squad, and a trio of rookies who joined the Bengals as college free agents in May — Jamoi Mayes, Jordan Moore and Rashod Owens. Mayes' lone catch of the preseason thus far was a 48-yarder in the fourth quarter of the opener at Philadelphia that kickstarted a touchdown drive.
Draft Class Aims to Punctuate Strong Preseason
Each member of Cincinnati's six-player draft class has seen substantial action through two preseason games, and all have flashed their potential. Defensively, first-round pick Shemar Stewart was a routine sight in the Eagles' backfield during the first half of the Aug. 7 contest and posted a tackle for loss. The linebacker duo of Demetrius Knight Jr. (second-round pick) and Barrett Carter (fourth round) has made notable contributions, as Knight has started both games and posted four tackles while Carter ranks second on the team with nine tackles and is coming off a momentum-shifting interception at Washington.
On the other side of the ball, third-round pick Dylan Fairchild has all but cemented himself as the team's starting left guard. His Pro Football Focus grade of 87.6 is the highest among any rookie offensive lineman through two weeks of preseason play. On 44 offensive snaps played, he has allowed zero sacks and just one pressure. Fellow O-lineman Jalen Rivers (fifth round) has lined up for 79 total offensive plays and stepped in at right guard during the second quarter of Monday night's game.
Halfback Tahj Brooks (sixth round) has been the busiest member of Cincinnati's running backs room, leading the team in rushing attempts (21) and yards (73). He also has shown himself to be a pass-catching option out of the backfield with four receptions for 12 yards.
McPherson Shows Off Leg in Preseason
Evan McPherson is a perfect three-for-three on field goal attempts this preseason, with two of those including a 51-yarder against the Eagles and a 54-yarder to help put away the Commanders. He has an extended track record of knocking through long-range kicks in preseason games, as 11 of his 26 field goals during his preseason career have come from 50 or more yards.
After missing the final five games of the 2024 campaign due to a groin injury, McPherson recalibrated his kicking mechanics in the offseason.
"I went back to what I grew up doing when I started kicking and in college and everything I've done leading up to my rookie season," he said. "I feel more comfortable in my technique now. I can focus on the kick and not my steps and all of the other stuff I was putting on myself."
Head coach Zac Taylor this week expressed a high level of confidence in his kicker, who enters this season ranking sixth in points accounted for in franchise history (445)
