Tuesday update: Chatman ankle sprain

Updated: 6:45 p.m.

The Bengals hit the Georgetown College practice field Tuesday under overcast skies and muggy, humid conditions in one of the hottest practices of the summer.

The team is practicing in shoulder pads and helmets. Linebackers Brandon Johnson and Rey Maualuga are back but working out lightly and don't look for them in Friday's preseason opener in New Orleans. In fact, Johnson indicated he wouldn't play.

Also expected out for Friday are wide receiver Antonio Chatman (sprained ankle) and rookie defensive tackle Pernell Phillips (groin). No timetables were given, but Chatman looks to have a severe enough sprain that he could be out three weeks after injuring it Friday in the scrimmage.

Also back on the field practicing Tuesday were tight end Daniel Coats (ankle), defensive tackle Tank Johnson after he missed Monday's morning session, and safety Corey Lynch.

Looking ahead to Friday, offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said he figured quarterback Carson Palmer to play a series or two depending on the length. He also said first-teamers would be interspersed with backups as the game unfolded and that he's going to try to make sure the running backs get rotated enough to play against quality competition.
