Maxwell done for year

Updated: 5 p.m.

It just keeps going from bad to worse for the Bengals receivers. Four days after he looked to be emerging as the third receiver, Marcus Maxwell was waived injured and is lost to the club for the year.

Maxwell is believed to have suffered a muscle injury Tuesday during practice. A third-year receiver who came over from San Francisco last season, Maxwell had three catches for 37 yards Sunday against the Lions.

If he clears waivers, he will revert to the Bengals Reserve/Injured list.

Which means the top four receivers look to be shelved for Sunday's third preseason game against the Saints on Saturday (7:35 p.m.) at Paul Brown Stadim.

Chad Johnson (shoulder), T.J. Houshmandzadeh (hamstring), and Andre Caldwell (foot) are all out. So veterans Antonio Chatman and Glenn Holt and rookie Jerome Simpson figure to be the first group against New Orleans. Simpson has six of the trio's combined 11 preseason catches.

Cornerback Ethan Kilmer cleared waivers Thursday and is on Bengals IR.
