Deacon Turner, who rushed for 549 yards on 142 carries in 44 games with the Bengals of the late '70s, was shot to death over the weekend by a deputy in Bakersfield, Calf.
According to Bakersfield.com via ProFootballTalk.com, police were called to a store where juveniles were attempting to persuade adults to purchase alcohol for them. When officers arrived, they saw Turner, 56, his 19-year-old son, and a 16-year-old juvenile leaving the store with bags that contained among other things alcohol, the Web site said.
Turner initially cooperated, the report said, but when Turner then tried to leave police tried to stop him and he allegedly fought them. One of the officers reportedly was struck in the back of the head with a bag containing two 24-ounce cans of beer. Another officer then drew his pistol and fired twice at Turner, the Web site said. The incident is under investigation.
