GREEN BAY, Wis. -- After piling up a crushing time of possession in the first half in which the Packers more than doubled the clock, Green Bay wore down the Bengals defense for a 24-18 victory Sunday at Lambeau Field.
In his Bengals debut, quarterback Joe Flacco led the Bengals on a season-long 17-play, 78-yard touchdown drive to open the second half, and he capped it with a fourth-and-two touchdown pass to tight end Tanner Hudson under the goal posts at the back of the end zone. Flacco finished the day completing 29 of 45 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns.
The last two passes of the drive went to Hudson in a game he made his first catches of the season. He was pressed into service early in the game when tight end Mike Gesicki left with a pectoral injury.
The Bengals also lost All-Pro edge rusher Trey Hendrickson late in the first half with a back injury.
Bengals kicker Evan McPherson’s bid for NFL history at the end of the first half was foiled by Packers head Matt LaFleur's timeout that wiped out a 67-yard field goal. A yard longer than Justin Tucker's NFL record, McPherson originally coaxed it off the crossbar, but his second attempt following the timeout flew short of the uprights.
McPherson later hit a 45-yarder with 10:43 left in the fourth quarter to cut the lead to 17-10.
Flacco led another drive in the fourth quarter, taking Cincinnati 54 yards down the field in 13 plays. He lofted a pass on fourth down for Ja'Marr Chase, which the All-Pro receiver brought in with one hand for his 50th career touchdown. Flacco then found HB Chase Brown for the two-point conversion to cut the lead to six late.
After a Packers field goal extended their lead back to nine, Cincinnati drove into Green Bay territory and attempted another long-distance field goal that would have made it a one-score affair with under a minute left. But McPherson's try sailed wide right, sealing the result.
NOTES
Flacco Finds Hudson on Fourth-and-Goal
Cincinnati elected to go for it on fourth down at the Packers' two-yard line on the opening drive of the second half, and Flacco converted with his first touchdown pass as a Bengal, a dart to Hudson in the back of the end zone. The score capped off a 17-play, 78-yard drive that lasted 10 minutes and 14 seconds of game time.
Flacco completed six of nine passes for 50 yards during the drive, including a 13-yarder to Tee Higgins that set up first-and-goal at the Green Bay one. The Bengals also churned out 28 rushing yards during the possession.
The 17 plays were the most in a scoring drive by the Bengals this season, surpassing a 15-play touchdown march in the fourth quarter of Week 2 against Jacksonville.
Stone's First of the Year Ends Opening Drive
Safety Geno Stone came up with his first interception of the season on a tipped pass and returned it 25 yards to end Green Bay's opening drive. The play came on a third-and-five from the Cincinnati 19-yard line, and Love was flushed out of the pocket by defensive end Cam Sample before throwing a pass that was deflected by cornerback DJ Turner II.
Stone now has five interceptions since joining the Bengals as a free agent in 2024. His 12 total picks since the start of the 2023 campaign — his final year with Baltimore — are tied for the second-most in the NFL in that span.
Turner Shuts it Down
Turner finished the day credited with five passes defensed. He is the first Bengals player with five PDs in a game since Nov. 8, 2009, when Johnathan Jones had five in a win over Baltimore.
Turner now is up to 11 passes defensed this season, which already marks a career high. His previous high was eight PDs last season.
Turner entered Week 6 with six PDs, which were tied for fifth-most in the NFL. He is the third player in the league this season to record five PDs in a game, joining Philadelphia's Quinyon Mitchell in Week 4 and Green Bay's Keisean Nixon in Week 2.
McPherson Hits 100
McPherson's 45-yard field goal to cut the lead to 17-10 was his 100th career field goal make. He became the fifth-fastest kicker in franchise history to reach the century mark, trailing only Doug Pelfrey (59 games), Shayne Graham (62), Mike Nugent (62) and Horst Muhlmann (65).
No. 50 for Uno
Ja'Marr Chase fought off tight coverage and brought in a Flacco pass with one hand for a 19-yard touchdown on fourth-and-five with just under five minutes left in regulation. The score marked Chase's 50th career receiving touchdown in what was his 68th regular-season game played. He is the fastest player in Bengals history to reach 50 touchdown catches, and the seventh-fastest in NFL history. Chase finished the afternoon leading both teams in receptions (10) and receiving yards (94).
QUOTES
"I'm frustrated right now because we weren't able to pull it out, and these guys deserved that. I know we've lost several games in a row now. You'll feel that, and I mean this as a positive thing -- these guys expect to win. They believe in each other. We are going to break through, and we are going to be in the thick of this thing. We are going to find some wins. We're going to hang tight together, and it's going to come sooner rather than later. I can promise you that." - Head Coach Zac Taylor, on his confidence in the team recovering from the loss
"This is a long season. I know it's easy to be down on yourself in hard times, but playing with confidence shows. We've got to find a way to get some of that back. I think we do have the ability to do that. We've got a big week coming up, and these division games are always good matchups." - Quarterback Joe Flacco, on turning the page to Thursday night's game against Pittsburgh
"He started calling the play and then I called it. I thought they were going to jump the route. But they didn't …. It was a cloud (coverage). He threw it where I could either catch it or there was a penalty." - Receiver Ja'Marr Chase, on his fourth-quarter touchdown
