With his defense sweeping the boards on a slew of three-and-outs, quarterback Joe Burrow again went All-State Ohio point guard Sunday at Paycor Stadium when he dished 305 yards to nine different receivers that included a 21-yarder to 345-pound offensive lineman Cody Ford in a 37-14 victory over the Cardinals.
Burrow sliced up Arizona in less than three quarters, earning an early seat for the second straight week after leading the Bengals to their most points in two straight games during head coach Zac Taylor's tenure.
Seven days after Burrow hit 78% of his passes in the 45-21 win in Miami, he went for 81% on 24 of 31. Running back Chase Brown chipped in with his third 100-yard rushing day (101) of the season on 22 carries and bulled for two touchdowns.
Edge Myles Murphy led the defense with another sack to go with six tackles, and cornerback Dax Hill was all over the field as the Bengals held quarterback Jacoby Brissett to nearly less than 50% passing.
The Bengals never blinked all day in building a 23-7 halftime lead when Chase Brown ripped off 107 scrimmage yards, wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase scored his first two touchdowns in more than two months, Evan McPherson drilled a 57-yard field goal, and the defense sent the Cardinals scurrying off the field on four three-and-outs.
Burrow, off the Bengals' best road passer rating ever last week in Miami with a 146.5, popped up a 136.7 in the first half on a radar 16 of 20 for 176 yards and those two touchdowns to Chase.
With the Bengals leading 13-7, Chase Brown rescued the offense from back-to-back sacks when he took a third-and-22 flip from Burrow for 15 yards to put McPherson in range for that 57-yarder. McPherson converted his 12th straight field goal attempt to boost the lead to 16-7 with 3:21 left in the first half.
NOTES
Chase Climbs Bengals Charts
Ja'Marr Chase finished Sunday's game with seven receptions for 60 yards and two touchdowns. He capped off the Bengals' opening scoring drive with a 13-yard catch, spin and run for a touchdown, and earlier in that possession he moved up on several of the team's all-time statistical charts. With three receptions on the drive, he surpassed T.J. Houshmandzadeh (507) for the fifth-most catches in Bengals history. He also logged 39 receiving yards, surpassing Cris Collinsworth (6,698) for the fifth-most ever by a Cincinnati player.
Chase's second touchdown grab of the day, an eight-yarder late in the second quarter, was his 53rd career scoring reception, which tied Ring of Honor member Isaac Curtis for the fourth-most in Bengals history.
Chase's career totals following Sunday's game are 512 receptions for 6,741 yards and 53 touchdowns. He surpassed former New Orleans receiver Michael Thomas (510) for the second-most catches in a player's first five seasons in NFL history.
Chase is up to 112 receptions for 1,316 yards and seven touchdowns this season. His 112 catches match Houshmandzadeh's total in 2007 for the second-most in a season in team history, trailing only Chase's team record of 127 last year. Chase also became the first player in league history with at least 80 receptions, 1,000 receiving yards and seven receiving touchdowns in each of his first five seasons.
Career Day for Brown
Chase Brown finished with 101 rushing yards on 22 carries and 40 receiving yards on three catches, good for a career-high 141 yards from scrimmage. It marked his eighth game this season with 100 or more scrimmage yards, and he surpassed 3,000 scrimmage yards in his career. It also was his fourth career game with 100 or more rushing yards.
Brown also scored a pair of rushing touchdowns in the third quarter, finding the end zone on runs of six yards and one yard to help the Bengals break the game open. He has five total touchdowns in the last two games.
Burrow Ties Palmer, Dalton
With two more scoring passes in the win over the Cardinals, Burrow increased his career touchdown pass total to 154, which ties Carson Palmer for the fourth-most in Bengals history. He now is 33 TD passes shy of matching Boomer Esiason (187) for third on the team's all-time list. Sunday marked Burrow's 49th career game with multiple touchdown passes.
Burrow also logged his 28th career game with 300 or more passing yards, which ties Andy Dalton for the most in team history. It also marks the fifth-most 300-yard passing games in a player's first six seasons in NFL history, surpassing Matthew Stafford and Jameis Winston (27 each).
Money Mac Drills 57-Yarder
Evan McPherson increased Cincinnati's lead to 16-7 in the second quarter with a 57-yard field goal. It marked his fifth made field goal from 50 yards or beyond this season and the 29th such kick of his career, which are the sixth-most in the NFL since he entered the league in 2021. It also tied for the fourth-longest made field goal in Bengals history.
McPherson also finished the day with four made extra points, which improved his career PAT total to 204. That surpasses Doug Pelfrey (201) for the fourth-most made PATs in team history.
Perine Extends Lead
Samaje Perine boosted Cincinnati's lead to 13-0 on the first play of the second quarter, finding the end zone on a one-yard run. It marked his third rushing touchdown of the season, which ties his career high from the 2020 season.
Perine also has scored a rushing touchdown in consecutive games for the first time in his career, after punching in a four-yard score last week at Miami.
Extra Points
- Offensive tackle Cody Ford, who celebrated his 29th birthday on Sunday, recorded his first career reception in the third quarter. Ford lined up on the outside as an eligible receiver, caught a quick pass from Burrow and fought off several defenders for a 21-yard gain. His catch set up a Chase Brown rushing touchdown three plays later.
- Rookie Shemar Stewart recorded his first career sack late in the third quarter, bringing down Jacoby Brissett for a loss of six yards.
- Ke'Shawn Williams recorded the Bengals' longest punt return of the season with a 43-yard runback late in the second quarter. The return set up a three-play scoring drive, capped by Burrow's eight-yard touchdown pass to Chase to boost the lead to 23-7.
- Williams later had his first career reception on a five-yard catch in the fourth quarter.
