BALTIMORE -- While Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Burrow knocked off the rust with two second-half darts for touchdowns, his defense knocked around the Ravens on a field they had never lost on a Thursday night under head coach John Harbaugh before the Bengals pulled off a Thanksgiving Night special in a 32-14 victory.
Under the festive M&T Bank Stadium lights, the Bengals turned over the Ravens five times, forcing two-time MVP Lamar Jackson into two fumbles and an interception as Burrow led the Bengals to seven scores in their first 10 possessions. Burrow, making his first appearance in 75 days, finished 24 of 46 for 261 yards.
Evan McPherson kicked a career-high six field goals and wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase again dented 100 yards against Baltimore. Halfback Chase Brown also crossed 100 yards from scrimmage for a Bengals-record sixth game in a row.
In the Ravens' five-game winning streak, the Baltimore defense had held foes to an NFL-best 13.4 points per game and hadn't allowed anybody to hit 20. But the Bengals wrecked it all with a healthy double-digit lead in time of possession and 22 total first downs.
NOTES
Tanner's One-Hander Extends Lead
Tanner Hudson fought off Ravens All-Pro safety Kyle Hamilton in the end zone and brought in a Burrow pass with one hand for Cincinnati's first touchdown of the night. The score marked Hudson's second touchdown of the season and extended the Bengals' lead to 19-7 early in the third quarter.
Hudson's touchdown capped off a 10-play, 61-yard drive which saw Cincinnati's offense convert two third downs. For Burrow, it was his first touchdown pass since a four-yarder to Ja'Marr Chase in Week 2 against Jacksonville. He now has at least one scoring pass in each of his last 14 games played, dating back to Week 7 of last season.
Burrow Doubles Up With Dart to Iosivas
On a third-and-nine from the Baltimore 29-yard line later in the third quarter, Burrow fired a laser down the seam that hit Andrei Iosivas in stride for his second touchdown pass of the night. The score boosted Cincinnati's lead to 26-14, marking the first time a team put up 20 points on the Ravens since Week 5. Baltimore had a six-game streak of holding opponents below 20 points prior to Thursday night.
The scoring play was the 12th receiving touchdown of Iosivas' career and his second this season. It also was his first NFL touchdown of more than 10 yards, as each of his first 11 career scoring catches came in the low red zone.
Knight Snags Red Zone Pick
The Ravens were threatening to close the gap at the Bengals' 15-yard line early in the fourth quarter, before Myles Murphy deflected a Jackson pass and Demetrius Knight Jr. came up with his second interception of the year. Knight returned the pick 39 yards to the Cincinnati 47-yard line, eventually setting up a 52-yard field goal by Evan McPherson that increased the lead to 29-14.
Both of Knight's interceptions this season have come in the red zone, as he previously picked off Broncos quarterback Bo Nix in the end zone in Week 4 at Denver.
Knight's pick marked the fourth forced turnover by the Cincinnati defense. The Bengals finished with five, their most in a game since Week 15 of last season at Tennessee, when they logged six in a road win.
Ja'Marr Passes Jerry
With 80 receiving yards in the first half, Ja'Marr Chase improved his career receiving yardage total to 6,366, which surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer Jerry Rice (6,364) for the fourth-most in a player's first five seasons in NFL history.
Chase finished the game with seven catches for 110 yards, moving his current career yardage to 6,396. He now trails only Justin Jefferson (7,432), Torry Holt (6,784) and Hall of Famer Randy Moss (6,743) for the most yards in a player's first five years. Thursday night marked Chase's 24th career game with 100 or more receiving yards.
Burrow Leads FG Drive to Open Scoring
Burrow and the offense put together a 10-play, 51-yard opening drive to set up Evan McPherson's 31-yard field goal that gave Cincinnati an early 3-0 lead.
Burrow completed four of six passes for 34 yards on the drive, including a 14-yard hookup with tight end Drew Sample on a play action.
Money Mac Kicks for Career High
Following his 31-yarder on the opening drive, McPherson made kicks from 42, 24 and 33 yards in the first half to give the Bengals a 12-7 lead at the break. McPherson finished with six total field goals, surpassing his previous career high of four. The six field goals tied Doug Pelfrey's mark on November 6, 1994 at Seattle for the second-most in a game in Bengals history. The only Cincinnati kicker with more field goals in a game was Shayne Graham, who knocked through a team-record seven on November 11, 2007 at Baltimore.
McPherson's 20 points accounted for on Thursday night were the second-most in a game by a Bengals kicker behind Graham's 21 in that 2007 road victory over the Ravens.
McPherson now has made 20 consecutive field goal attempts from inside 50 yards, dating back to Week 13 of last season.
Ossai's Strip-Sack Leads to Game's First Turnover
Joseph Ossai broke through the line on a third-down play in the first quarter and knocked the ball free from Jackson's grip, and fellow edge rusher Cedric Johnson caught it in the air at the Baltimore five-yard line. It marked Ossai's fourth sack of the season and his first forced fumble, and it was Johnson's first career recovery.
Late in the first half, Ossai blitzed Jackson again for a nine-yard sack on third down to push Baltimore out of field goal range. Ossai now has 10 sacks over his last 19 games played, dating back to Week 11 of last season. Thursday night was the first multi-sack game of his career.
Battle Forces Fumble Ahead of Goal Line for Touchback
The Ravens appeared to extend their lead on a long touchdown pass midway through the second quarter, but Jordan Battle caused tight end Isaiah Likely to lose control of the ball before he crossed the goal line, and it rolled through the back of the end zone for a touchback.
It marked the first forced fumble of Battle's career. The turnover led to an 11-play, 74-yard field goal drive that put Cincinnati back in front, 9-7.
Extra Points
- Thursday night's victory marked Zac Taylor's 50th regular-season win as a head coach.
- Halfback Chase Brown finished with 78 rushing yards and 35 receiving yards, good for 113 yards from scrimmage. It marked his sixth consecutive game with 100 or more scrimmage yards, which is the longest streak in Bengals history and longest active streak in the NFL.
- Cedric Johnson recorded the first two fumble recoveries of his young career in the first half. Following his recovery on the Ossai strip-sack, he jumped on a loose ball in Ravens territory late in the second quarter. That turnover set up a 33-yard field goal by McPherson to make it 12-7 before the end of the half.
QUOTES
"That was kind of the first all-around game we've played all season, it felt like. It wasn't perfect by any means, but road divisional wins on Thursday nights never come easy. It started with our defense. The five turnovers - just getting them off the field and giving our offense great field position, getting stops in huge moments when they had a chance to gain some momentum - I couldn't be prouder of those guys. Then, the offense picked it up in the second half with some of those touchdowns. Evan McPherson coming up big - six field goals on a day that's not a perfect day. It was a cold day, a little windy. I thought he hung in there and did a great job for us. I'm really proud of our team." - Head coach Zac Taylor, on his overall thoughts on the win
"I thought in the second half, I started to put it where I wanted and settled in a little bit. I certainly missed some throws earlier that I typically make, but after that I felt pretty comfortable back there. I thought the O-line did great. We ran it well. Obviously, the defense played great. I'm just going to keep getting better." - Quarterback Joe Burrow, on his performance in his return to game action
"First off, I think our defense has been doing good the past three weeks, just giving us opportunities after opportunities to make a play for each drive and just put a point on the board. They've been doing a good job. As far as today, we've got to capitalize more off those turnovers. They're giving us the ball multiple times, we've got to capitalize on those." - Wide receiver Ja'Marr Chase, on the defense forcing five turnovers
