Voting for the 2026 Pro Bowl Games wraps up Monday. We'll be looking at a few Bengals who deserve to be recognized in San Francisco during Super Bowl week, starting with one of the more underrated defenders in the NFL, CB DJ Turner II.
Turner has enjoyed a breakout season on the back end of the Cincinnati defense. He leads the NFL in passes defensed with 17 entering Week 15. He had five in Week 6 against the Packers alone, the most in a single game by a Bengal since CB Johnathan Joseph in 2009. His 17 passes defensed rank as the most by a Bengal since CB Leon Hall (24) and Joseph (20) in 2009.
Turner has recorded two interceptions this season, including a diving pick late in Week 1 to help seal a win over the Browns and a Sportscenter Top 10 worthy play against the Steelers in Week 7. Matched up against WR D.K. Metcalf, Turner managed to rip the ball away from the behemoth wideout and come down with the ball himself, setting the offense up for potential points heading into halftime of what turned out to be a 33-31 victory. He also forced a huge fumble at the goal line in Week 14.
"We've asked him to do a really hard job each week. Take on the go-to guy, and he's done it and performed at a really, really high level," Defensive coordinator Al Golden said. "But, certainly, he should be in the (Pro Bowl) conversation based on his performance, his approach and consistency. Everybody forgets that part of it. Just the consistent part of it that separates you when you get to that level."
Per Pro Football Focus, Turner's 80.3 coverage grade ranks fifth among all cornerbacks with at least 100 coverage snaps. He has a 31% forced incompletion percentage, the highest in the league. His 49.0% reception percentage allowed is the 11th best percentage, allowing 24 catches on 49 targets, per PFF. In that Week 6 game with five pass breakups, Turner allowed three total catches for 22 yards.
As Golden pointed out, Turner is taking on the opponent's top target week in and week out and shutting them down. He limited Metcalf to one reception on five targets in the two matchups with Pittsburgh this season and didn't allow Lions WR Amon-Ra St. Brown to catch a pass when lined up with him in Week 5. In Week 9, Turner shut out Bears WR Rome Odunze, holding him without a catch a week after he torched the Ravens for 114 yards on seven receptions. He's been an iron man, playing in every game and playing the fifth-most snaps in the NFL among corners (841) and the seventh-most coverage snaps (497) per PFF.
The third-year Michigan man has allowed under 50 yards in every game this season except two and has yet to allow an individual receiver to surpass 50 yards. Vikings WR Justin Jefferson had two catches for 50 yards with Turner in coverage in Week 3 on four targets (Turner still recorded a pass breakup). He's yet to allow five receptions in a game as well. The second-round pick has two games this season where he didn't allow any receptions: Week 5 against the Lions and Week 11 against the Steelers.
"He's proven to be a guy we can really count on," head coach Zac Taylor said. "You can genuinely feel the confidence oozing off of him, he's been a tremendous asset for us… He understands what it means to cover their best guy… and he's willing to embrace it all."
