Defensive stand
We haven’t seen Teryl Austin much at all this offseason, his first as the Bengals defensive coordinator. But when he surfaced late Friday night in the media room with three of his position coaches from all three levels of his defense, it was a little bit clearer how he plans to take them to the next level.

Defense throws it back to look ahead
This is how it used to look back in the day. The NFL’s best quarterbacks would waltz into Paul Brown Stadium and leave with not only a loss, but a bruised passer rating courtesy of the Double A Gap blitz and a Velcro secondary. In Sunday's 26-17 win over Matthew Stafford's Lions the Bengals defense looked to the future with a blast from the past.

Bengals split on injuries on eve of cuts
That sound is Bengaldom exhaling with initial reports that wide receiver John Ross’ right knee injury that he suffered in Thursday’s pre-season finale isn’t serious. So it looks like seven wide receivers still have a chance to make Saturday's cut to 53. One last look at the roster.

Bengals kicked in finale under injury cloud
INDIANAPOLIS - With their first-round pick getting tests for his knee and their No. 3 quarterback wearing a splint on his throwing thumb, injuries overshadowed Thursday night’s 7-6 loss in the pre-season finale to the Colts and may impact Saturday’s final cuts.

Final bow with a kick
INDIANAPOLIS - The kicking competition, of course, is the most intriguing roster storyline of them all for Thursday’s pre-season finale (7 p.m.-Cincinnati’s Channel 12) against the Colts. But the last five or so spots are about as jumbled as they’ve been in several seasons pending suspensions, injuries, and tight position battles.

For openers, it's all relative
This one has all the feel of a Thanksgiving dinner instead of a football opener. It seems like in Friday night's pre-season opener (7:30-Cincinnati's Channel 12) everyone is related by either blood or ball. Leading the way are the Hardy Nickersons, a revered name in Buccaneer football.

Bengals hope kicking game reveals speed and depth
As the Bengals prepare for Friday night’s pre-season opener at Paul Brown Stadium (7:30-Cincinnati’s Channel 12) against Tampa Bay, there is the sense that several of their first- and second-year players have taken steps from where they were and made their team as fast as it’s ever been. But special teams boss Darrin Simmons needs to see a game because there's fast and playing fast.

What to watch on defense
The Bengals hold their first of nine voluntary practices Tuesday morning, which amounts to their first appearance on the field for the 2017 season. So we’ll volunteer that if defensive coordinator Paul Guenther has most of his spots locked up, he’ll experiment a bit with whom to play with whom and when with an eye to jacking up the pass rush. Welcome to Paulie G.’s spring lab with one of the experiments Auburn rookie Carl Lawson.
