BENGALS 2004 SUMMARY |
The team announced in February its intention to install a synthetic playing surface at Paul Brown Stadium, replacing the grass field that had been in use since 2000. In early July, the job was completed on a new FieldTurf surface. In March, head coach Marvin Lewis announced that Carson Palmer, top overall pick in the 2003 Draft, was promoted to the team's No. 1 QB job for 2004. The team also made its most significant uniform change since 1981. The signature striped helmet was not changed, but the jersey design was modernized, black pants were added as a regular option to white pants, and a special-occasion orange jersey was added.
After losing four of their first five games, the Bengals rebounded to post wins in seven of their final 11 to finish with an 8-8 mark for the second consecutive year. The season was highlighted by several impressive individual performances as evidenced by four Bengals (T Willie Anderson, CB Tory James, WR Chad Johnson and RB Rudi Johnson) earning Pro Bowl berths, the most Cincinnati representatives in the league's annual All-Star game since 1990. Anderson made his second straight Pro Bowl despite playing on an injured knee that required surgery at the end of the season. James picked off eight passes, one short of the franchise single-season mark of nine by Ken Riley (1976). Chad Johnson hauled in 95 passes, the third highest single-season total in team history. Rudi Johnson rushed for 1454 yards to break the Bengals single-season rushing mark previously held by Corey Dillon (1435). |

 On Nov. 28 the Bengals and Browns combined for the second-highest single-game point total in NFL history in Cincinnati's 58-48 win at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bengals racked up 504 yards of total offense.
K Shayne Graham scored 122 points to break the franchise single-season scoring mark of 121 previously held by K Doug Pelfrey (1995).
The top overall pick in the 2003 Draft, Carson Palmer made his playing debut in '04 and took every Bengals offensive snap until he was sidelined by a knee injury in Game 13. Palmer posted a 96.9 passer rating in his last six games after registering a 62.6 rating over his first seven games. In his last six games he completed 68.7% of his passes (127-of-185) for an average of 238.2 yards per game, with 13 TDs and 8 INTs. Palmer was named AFC Offensive Player of the Week after leading the Bengals to a 27-26 comeback win Dec. 5 at Baltimore.
The Bengals established a home season attendance record of 524,248 to break the mark of 479,488 set a season earlier.
