Slants and screens: Bengals vs. Vikings

AJ McCarron's status for Friday's pre-season opener is day-to-day.

The Bengals got washed out of their Tuesday practice 20 minutes in when a downpour sent players and fans scurrying for cover at the Paul Brown Stadium practice fields.

Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis danced with the weather all day. When there were indications the storm was blowing in at 4 p.m., he moved up practice an hour, from 3-2. When the radar didn’t let up, he opted for meetings and indoor walk-throughs. There was a rainy-day-at-summer-camp feel to it when card games and ping-pong broke out in between assignments …

Wednesday is going to be a much tougher day. They figure to wear full pads to greet Mike Zimmer’s Vikings in a 3 p.m. workout on the practice fields. They’ll ease through an 11 a.m. Thursday practice with the Vikes before opening the preseason with them Friday night (7:30-Cincinnati’s Channel 12) at PBS …

Left tackle Andrew Whitworth (shoulder) won’t play, but he’s expected back to practice Monday …

Backup quarterback AJ McCarron (neck) didn’t practice Tuesday and he’s day-to-day, so his status for Friday is unknown …

Cornerback Dre Kirkpatrick (jammed finger) was back Tuesday but they decided to add a corner to their limping position with Darqueze Dennard (ankle) and William Jackson (pectoral) out. You may not want to call rookie free agent Tony McRae merely “a camp body.” That’s what Chris Lewis-Harris was supposed to be in 2012 when everyone was banged up and he’s still here.

The 5-9, 172-pound McRae was cut by the Raiders two weeks after they signed him following the draft out of North Carolina A&T, where he played four seasons and was a first-team all-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference selection as a senior ...
