Apparently convinced that left end Robert Geathers
is going to be ready for the regular-season opener following Friday's arthroscopic knee surgery and anticipating a numbers crunch on the defensive line, the Bengals released veteran defensive end Derrick Harvey before Sunday night's mock game at Paul Brown Stadium.
Harvey, a former No. 1 pick working on his third team, made a stop on the goal-line for the second unit in Saturday's scrimmage. But that didn't stop one of the potential scenarios in Bengals camp, where the club is looking at carrying extra defensive backs because of the battered cornerback position and carrying as few as eight defensive linemen.
With Geathers, backup Carlos Dunlap, fellow line starters Geno Atkins, Domata Peko and Michael Johnson, as well as rookie tackles Devon Still and Brandon Thompson presumably safe, that leaves one spot for such players tackle Pat Sims and end Jamaal Anderson in one of the many scenarios.
