Troy Everhart Named Marvin Lewis Coach of the Year Award Winner
Everhart | February 20, 2007 - Winton Woods High School's Troy Everhart has been named the winner of the Marvin Lewis Coach of the Year Award presented by National City. The award is presented on behalf of the Marvin Lewis Community Fund and recognizes one of the top high school football coaches in the Tri-State area for their teaching skills, sportsmanship, dedication to their players and the community and commitment to education.
"We received nominations for a number of worthy coaches," said Cincinnati Bengals Head Coach Marvin Lewis. "Troy stood out for how he has led his players and pushed them to become better students and better men."
As the Winton Woods head football coach, Everhart has led the Warriors to three Fort Ancient Valley Conference (FAVC) championships as well as appearances in the Ohio Division II playoffs the past two years. He owns a .600 winning percentage in his eight years at Winton Woods and was named FAVC coach of the year in 2000.
Everhart is a mentor, teacher, and father figure to the young men who play for him. He started "lunch bunch" tutoring, after school study tables, and SAT/ACT prep classes for his players. He has emphasized community service with his players encouraging them to participate in a mentoring program and spring cleanup at a local YMCA.
Everhart also applied for and received the first "Play it Smart" program through the National Football Foundation. "Play it Smart" is designed to take student-athletes' passion for sport and intense dedication to their team and transform it into a force for greater good in their lives. At less than a dollar-a-day per student-athlete, the program has sent 80 percent of its participants onto college.
He has consistently gone beyond the call of duty for his players. From reaching into his own pocket to make sure that players can pay the standardized test fees to driving players to recruiting visits, Everhart has done whatever it takes to make sure his players succeed on and off the field.
Everhart was recognized for his achievements at the Greater Cincinnati Chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Scholar-Athletes Banquet. Coach Lewis presented Everhart with the award.
Past recipients of the Marvin Lewis Coach of the Year Award are Mike Martin (Taft High School, 2005), Rodney Roberts (Springboro High School, 2004) and the inaugural winner, Steve Channell (Edgewood High School, 2003).
